How I Learned to Wake Up on Time

I’m not naturally a morning person. When I was younger, I struggled to get out of bed every morning. But now, I get up early and on time almost every day.

Here are some things that worked for me:

  1. Get an alarm that’s hard to turn off. I use I Can’t Wake Up!, which you can set up to require you to scan a bar code (taped to the wall on the other side of my room) before you turn it off. You can also have it require you to shake the phone for 30 seconds, which I find wakes me up.
  2. “Practice” waking up. This sounds really silly, but but bear with me. Turn out the lights and lie in bed like you’re going to sleep, but set an alarm for 3 minutes in the future. When it goes off, jump out of bed immediately. Repeat this 5 or 10 times until it feels like a natural reaction.
  3. Find a way to enjoy mornings. Particularly find a way to enjoy mornings that gets you up and active. Have a regular early cup of coffee, do some exercise, or go for a morning walk.
  4. Wake up at the same time every day. This is classic advice, but it really works.

I hope these work for you, too.
